.SH "DESCRIPTION"
.BR linuxnexw-ticker
,
.BR freshmeat-ticker
, and
.BR slashdot-ticker
put a display of current headlines on your screen.
.B linuxnews-ticker
displays both Slashdot and Freshmeat headlines, the other two commands
display only only headlines from their respective web sites.
It will query the servers for new headlines every 30 minutes.
(Slashdot does not want us to query them more often, and Freshmeat only
updates every 2 hours.)
.SH KEYS
Please see the KEYS section in
.BR ticker (1)
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
.B \-h, \-\-help
Show summary of options.
.TP
.B \-f, \-\-finger
Get new headlines via finger protocol, rather than the default of http.
Only useful if Slashdot headlines are being displayed, ignored for
Freshmeat.
.TP
.B \-m num, \-\-max=num
Display a maximum of this many messages, rather than all messages.
.TP
.B \-c, \-\-comments
Do not display the number of comments on an article.
.TP
.B \-s, \-\-section
Do not display the section of an article.
.TP
.B \-d, \-\-dept
Do not display the department of an article.
.TP
.B \-a min, \-\-age=min
Display only articles that were posted less than this many minutes ago. Note
that using an age of less than 30 is pointless since the display only
updates every 30 minutes anyway.
.TP
.B ticker options
Options to pass on to
.BR ticker (1)
, the program that is responsible for actually scrolling news on the
display. For example, you can use "-d.1" to increase the scrolling speed.
See
.BR ticker (1)
for more options.
.SH ENVIRONMENT
.TP
.B http_proxy
If set, this points to a http proxy to use instead of connecting to the
servers directly. If your proxy caches pages for longer than 30 minutes,
this may not be a good thing to use, simply unset the variable to disable.
.SH NOTES
To use the other 23 or so lines of your screen for something useful while
the ticker is running, you might want to use
.BR splitvt (1)

.SH BUGS
Currently the --age option assumes that slashdot and freshmeat are in the
EDT timezone. This will probably change sometime this fall, and break the
program. Hopefully by then I will have fixed it.
