TkPGP INSTALL
=============
You do NOT need to be 'root' to install and use TkPGP.
However this is recommended. To install TkPGP you unpack
the source archive:
$ tar xzvf tkpgp-VERSION.tar.gz
If your OS is HP/UX or its friend then 'tar' may not be
able to unzip the file automatically. Do this instead:
$ gunzip tkpgp-VERSION.tar.gz
$ tar xvf tkpgp-VERSION.tar
Either of these procedures creates new directory 'tkpgp' and
some files in it. If permissions are right, file 'tkpgp'
should be executable.
When archive is unpacked, cd to the directory tkpgp/
and execute
make install
This will put all files where they rightfully belong:
Documentation and Makefile -> /usr/doc/TkPGP
Binary (script) ------------> /usr/local/bin
GNOME stuff ----------------> /usr/share/pixmaps,
/usr/share/gnome/apps/Internet
After that you can delete the tkpgp/ directory since
all files are already copied elsewhere. Read README next.
UNINSTALLATION
==============
To uninstall TkPGP run following command:
make -f /usr/doc/TkPGP/Makefile uninstall
This deletes all TkPGP files, but DOES NOT delete your
configuration file $(HOME)/.tkpgp - this is done intentionally
to preserve your settings during upgrades. It would require
a full scan of all filesystems anyway, because I have no idea
where on your system user directories are located.
GNOME INTEGRATION
=================
The file "tkpgp.desktop" is dropped into "magic" location
in system-wide GNOME menu. You should be able to see new menu
item (and mini-icon) under "Internet". If you want you can
install other launchers (such as buttons on panels etc.) -
see GNOME manual. You can move this icon later, create personal
menu items etc. etc. (however uninstall script won't find them).
KDE INTEGRATION
===============
Two files are provided and automatically installed to integrate
TkPGP and KDE. File "tkpgp.kdelnk" adds TkPGP to KDE "Applications"
menu, and file PGP-lock-32,xpm provides the icon for the menu.
There are no MIME data types linked with PGP, GPG at this time.
HOW TO INSTALL TkPGP WITHOUT ROOT PRIVILEGES
============================================
It is not required to be 'root' to install or use TkPGP.
However TkPGP will not be automatically integrated into
GNOME panel menus.
You unpack the archive as explained above. Then you should be
able to run TkPGP. Read file README about this. You can set
up symbolic link to that file from your $PATH directory, or you
can add the TkPGP/ directory to the $PATH (optional). You can
also set up your Window Manager to run the thing for you.
When you don't have root privileges you can't modify system-
wide GNOME menus. However you can add menu items to your own
GNOME desktop manually:
cp tkpgp.desktop $HOME/.gnome/apps
You probably should edit this file to point to correct icon
file (PGP-lock.xpm) because GNOME won't find it in standard
location. You also should take care about $PATH or specify
it explicitly in the tkpgp.desktop file... yes, it's a
real pain to install software without root password :(
