Brief information on how to build and install GNU Arch from source

*** On GNU/Linux and other Unix-like systems ***
(requiring the GNU bash shell):

To install tla, do

mkdir build
cd build
../src/configure --prefix=<install directory>
make

make install

The install directory defaults to build/=install. The installation step
may require root privileges depending on the install directory.

*** On 32-bit Microsoft Windows with the Cygwin environment ***

Now the Cygwin specific changes to tla by Lode Leroy
<lode_leroy@hotmail.com> are incorporated into the tla proper. However,
to get tla to work on Cygwin requires more than changes to tla; changes
to GNU diff, tar and patch are necessary. Since these tools are outside
the Arch Project's control, here the patches to them are just
distributed together with tla in the cygwin/ directory.

Follow the instructions in the file

cygwin/BUILD.txt

to first build the necessary tools and necessary patched versions of the
standard tools which are then installed in tla-specific directories.
Then build tla with the special options to configure, which lets tla know
the locations of our patched tools.

Note the instructions in cygwin/BUILD.txt assumes specific locations for
these patched tools; if you install them in different locations, adapt
the options to configure as necessary.

The Cygwin patches were taken from Lode Leroy's web site

http://www.geocities.com/lode_leroy/arch/

Refer to it for more information on the implementation details of the
Cygwin port .
