This is the new stable release of the Toshiba(tm) Linux Utilities. In addition
to the three original programs fan, svpw and hotkey are a new programs alarm,
dispswitch, tpasswd, tdocked, thotswap and TuxTime among others.
The home page for the Toshiba(tm) Linux Utilities is
http://www.buzzard.org.uk/toshiba/
The program that you are most likely interested in is TuxTime. This comprises
of two seperate programs wmtuxtime that provides a dockable applet under
WindowMaker and tuxtime-conf that allows the settings to be changed. The
purpose of TuxTime is to display the battery remaining status including
any secondary battery installed in the SelectBay issue warnings when the
battery levels drop to user defined levels and change the battery save
options when the power source changes. In future there will be GNOME and
KDE versions of wmtuxtime.
The utilities avaliable are:
fan - turn the cooling fan on/off
svpw - set the supervisor password
hotkey - report on Fn+F2/F3 and F4 changes
tpasswd - set the user password
thotswap - hotswap devices in the SelectBay
tdocked - determine docked status of laptop
alarm - select an alarm power on time
dispswitch - select internal/external/simultaneous video output on Librettos
tbacklight - turn the backlight on/off
ownerstring - change the ownerstring on the laptop
wmtuxtime - WindowMaker power save applet (can be run under GNONE/KDE/...)
Installation should be a dodle type './configure' to run the GNU Autoconfig
program, then 'make depend' to build the dependencies, 'make all' to build the
programs and 'make install' to install them. By default all files are installed
in /usr/local heirachy. This needs to be done when logged on as root.
The kernel module is no longer distributed with the utilities. There are too
many problems with people trying to compile with the wrong kernel headers,
unsuitable versions of gcc etc. The Toshiba SMM drive has been included in the
kernel distribution since version 2.2.17. This includes the 2.4.x series
kernels. Under 2.2.17 and later it is under the "General setup" menu, and under
2.4.x it is under "Processor type and features" menu. However the special
device file in /dev will be created and the module configuration file updated
when you run "make install". Most distributions will come with it compiled
already as a module. If "insmod toshiba" works as root then no further action
is required. Failing that a kernel recompile will be required.
If the programs don't work check that the module is loaded with "lsmod" and if
necessary load the module with "insmod toshiba". Also check that the special
device file /dev/toshiba exists with the following permisions and attributes
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 10, 181 Jan 31 2000 /dev/toshiba
The thotswap utility will only work with 2.2.x series and later kernels. It
is installed suid root as it requires access to /dev/hda to signal the
removal/insertion of the SelectBay devices.
