Comments regarding the Package.
I used deb-make for the first time. There might be stale file hanging
around. It is still difficult to use my own name (in PGP signing and
such) _and_ be root for all the necessary chowns.
The NIST Sphere libries are traditionally difficult to compile on
non-NIST computers. I hacked the install script (that does
everything, configuring, compiling, installing) to accept parameters
for Linux, and changed it to compile only the library, as necessary
for Transcriber.
The idea of NIST headers is still the best I've seen.
I had to install the Debian tcl8.0-dev and tk8.0-dev packages in order
to compile Snack 1.2.
I had to remove explicit -L/usr/lib in the Makefile of libtrans.so,
because otherwise, weirdly, some routines from libutil.a became
undefined. I guess either the linker is wrong or the link statement
is in fact illegal. (libutil.a is linked into libtrans.so, but
components of libutil.a are not compiled -fPIC).
