.TH "UPGRADE\-SYSTEM.CONF" "5" "March 31st 2004" "http://funkyware.konflux.at/" "Debian GNU/Linux"
.SH "NAME"
upgrade\-system.conf \-
.BR upgrade\-system (8)
configuration file

.SH "DESCRIPTION"
.BR upgrade\-system.conf
is the configuration file for the
.BR upgrade\-system (8)
which upgrades Debian systems. This file specifies options to be passed to
.BR apt\-get (8)
and
.BR deborphan (1).
.PP
Lines starting with a hash mark ("#") and empty lines are ignored.

.SH "EXAMPLE"
The configuration file contains three variables:

.SS CLEANOPTS
This variable is used to pass the command line option to
.BR apt\-get (8),
to determine whether the
.BR autoclean
or
.BR clean
action will be performed. For example:
.PP
	CLEANOPTS="clean"
.PP
Consult the
.BR apt\-get (8)
manual page to check which options are available for
any particular version, before setting this variable.

.SS UPGRADEOPTS
This variable is used to pass command line options to
.BR apt\-get (8)
and to determine whether the
.BR dist-upgrade
or
.BR upgrade
action will be performed. For example:
.PP
	UPGRADEOPTS="-yu dist-upgrade"
.PP
Consult the
.BR apt\-get (8)
manual page to check which options are available for
any particular version, before setting this variable.

.SS ORPHANOPTS
This variable is used to pass command line options to
.BR deborphan (1).
.PP
On Woody, the version available (1.0-3) is so desperately
crippled that it might be preferable to leave this variable empty:
.PP
	ORPHANOPTS=""
.PP
Since Sarge, precise control of orphaning is
possible, which makes this variable extremely useful. For example:
.PP
	ORPHANOPTS="--find-config --guess-doc --libdevel"
.PP
One should
read the
.BR deborphan (1)
manual page to check which options are available for
any particular version, before setting this variable.

.SH "SECURITY"
Because
.BR upgrade\-system
is an APT front-end, all precautions relating to APT configuration
should be observed. Special attention is required at:
.SS /etc/apt/preferences
To prevent untested packages from overwriting stable ones, setting
this combination of APT preferences is recommended:
.PP
.RS
.nf
Package: *
Pin: release a=stable
Pin\-Priority: 1001

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin\-Priority: 101

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin\-Priority: 99

Package: *
Pin: release a=experimental
Pin\-Priority: 9
.fi
.RE
.PP
This enforces a priority to packages from Stable, yet still allows ones
from Testing, Unstable or Experimental to get installed via appropriate
.BR apt\-get (8)
options to override the default release.

.SH "AUTHORS"
Martin Zdrahal <martin.zdrahal@konflux.at> made the original in 2003.
.PP
Martin\-Eric Racine <q\-funk@iki.fi> wrote this manual page, packaged
the Debian archive and added various enhancements in 2004.
