SYSTEMS WHERE VCG WAS CHECKED TO RUN
====================================

Note: I don't have anymore an IBM AIX system. The AIX validation refers
to the check of the older version VCG 1.2. I also don't have the
ULTRIX machine. This test was done by a user of VCG.

The following setups are tested on different machines. First, we list
the setups as it is written in Makefile, src/globals.h and demo/demo.csh.
These lists can be used, if you set up these files manually.
After that, a list of setups is added as it is produced by the config script
which can be used if you like to setup the files automatically by using
config.

Note that some access pathes (e.g. BINPATH, MANPATH, everything around X11)
may be different on your system.

On the Solaris machnine (SunOS 5.3) we had only gcc available, since the
language package was not installed. Thus, no tests with the Sun C compiler.

========== Setup for SunOS (Sparcstation, X11R5, gcc ) =================

PROBLEMS WITH SunOS:
--------------------
   1) It might be the case that parsegen is not available.
      Further, a tool called not_available might be called.
      Both tools are not required, thus messages about the nonexisting
      of both tools can be ignored.
   2) In some module, variables are declared but never used. This depends
      on the configuration. In other configurations, the same variables
      might be used.
   3) Linking with gcc -static causes strange effects: e.g. remote
      xvcg -display ... does not work. (This is not anymore true for
      gcc 2.6.3).
   4) On Solaris (SunOS 5.3), we had to setenv

         LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib:/usr/lib:/lib

      Otherwise, the dynamic libraries of X11 are not found, which results
      in messages like this:
          ld.so.1: xvcg: fatal: libXext.so.0: can't open file: errno=2
          Killed
   5) On Solaris (SunOS 5.3), we used /usr/ucb/install instead of
      /bin/install, i.e.

        INSTALLDIR = /usr/ucb/install -d -m 755
        INSTALL    = /usr/ucb/install -s -m 755 dummy /home/sander/bin/dummy

2) In some module, variables are declared but never used. This depends
   on the configuration. In other configurations, the same variables
   might be used.

3) Globally, make sure that your default shell is sh.
   Type "setenv SHELL /bin/sh", if necessary.
   This is necessary, because make uses the shell which is
   found in the variable SHELL.

   SHELL      = /bin/sh

4) On some MIPS ucode CC, characters are unsigned as default. Here,
   the C option -signed must be used.

5) The MIPS ucode CC reports some unreached statements after switches.
   Uncritical Warnings.

6) The MIPS ucode CC is unable to optimze certain functions. Messages
   like the following are uncritical:

     uopt: Warning: myisochar: this procedure not optimized because it
           exceeds size threshold;

================= Setup for AIX (IBM R6000, cc) =====================

PROBLEMS WITH AIX:
------------------
1) LaTeX was not available thus make fails to make the documentation.

2) The XL C compiler does not understand the keyword "const". The code
   is already adapted, if -DAIXCC is used, but this is really ugly.

3) There are two install commands. We assume to get /bin/install.
   The config file is not updated for /usr/bsd/install and may fail,
   if /usr/bsd/install is taken.

===================== Setup for Linux (PC, intel 486, gcc ) ===============

The Linux check was done by Christian Ferdinand (ferdi@cs.uni-sb.de).
I have no information about the release/version of his Linux.

PROBLEMS WITH Linux:
--------------------
   0) For your information: uname -srmv reports
	Linux 0.99.13 i486 #5 Mon Sep 20 13:12:48 CDT 1993
   1) Some targets of make result in a infinite loop. These are

	 make clean
	 make targetclean
	 make veryclean
	 make install

      To my surprise, make install works properly, except the fact that
      it installs infinitely often.
      The reason is probably the incompatible behaviour of gnu-make 3.68.

   2) MAXINT and MININT are defined in math. This may yield to preprocessor
      warnings: "MAXINT redefined in math.h", etc.
      Dito with MINLONG and MAXLONG.
   3) The include files in Linux/gcc seem to be different than expected
      for ANSI C. Thus, the gcc option -Wall reports a lot of nonsense.
      Do not use this option.
   4) /bin/echo does not exist. Thus, demo.csh must be changed by hand:
      All occurrences of /bin/echo replaced by /usr/bin/echo.
   5) Linking with gcc -static causes strange effects: e.g. remote
      xvcg -display ... does not work.
   6) The echo command does not display leading blancs of a line.
      Thus, the demo dequence "make test" looks rather ugly.
   7) I got a floating point exception for "xvcg expl/forms.vcg". The edges
      cannot be drawn.
      Since it is an i486, it is not the pentium bug ! But I currently
      don't know the reason. All other examples and tests work well.

================= Setup for HP-UX (IBM 9000/730, cc) ======================

The HP-UX check was done with support by E. Schoemer and Prof. G. Hotz
of the Universitaet des Saarlandes. I don't have a HP-UX maschine, but
they have one. Many thanks to them.

PROBLEMS WITH HP-UX:
-------------------
   1) It might be the case that parsegen is not available.
      Further, a tool called not_available might be called.
      Both tools are not required, thus messages about the nonexisting
      of both tools can be ignored.
   2) In some module, variables are declared but never used. This depends
      on the configuration. In other configurations, the same variables
      might be used.
   3) With X11R4, missing include files are reported. I don't know why.
      X11R5 works.
   4) The compiler might warn about _INCLUDE_POSIX_SOURCE redefined.
      The compiler complains about a undefined escape sequence.
      These are not fatal.
   5) Some source files are very large. The compiler dops the optimization
      in these cases.

   5) The compiler did not found the declarations of timeval and timezone.
      I added these in the file timelim.c. But now, it might happen that
      these declarations are superfluous and compiler on other HP-UX
      systems might complain about it.
   6) atof is buggy. All specifications that use floats woun't work.
      But we can live without floats.

========== Setup for ULTRIX (DecStation, X11R5, gcc ) =================

The first installation on a DecStation (ULTRIX) was done by A. Ertl
at the TU Wien. I don't have a DecStation. Many thanks to him.

PROBLEMS WITH ULTRIX:
--------------------

   1) The script config runs only with sh5 instead of sh.
   2) During "make xvcg" (or "make vcg") the files grammar.y,
      grammar.l and grammar.h are not found. This seems to
      be a path problem during make. As temporary solution,
      there is a shell script "ultrixpreconf", which must
      be started in the directory src before "make xvcg".
