Font problem seems to be in handling the font named "variable" in fallbacks.h.

Nothing seems to rectify it, not even replacing it with the explicit
-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--17-120-100-100-p-92-iso8859-1 or with fixed
or what-have-you.

I think viewmol's own font handling is fine. That is, display in the window
is fine (introductory text, atom labelling). The problem is only in the
menus. The menus are constructed in makemenu.c using XmCreatePulldownMenu
and related functions. Xm is supplied by lesstif-dev. Hence my conclusion
is that the problem is not with viewmol, it's with lesstif (as the X FAQ
says, the toolkits were making these kinds of errors).
