<title>Creating a New Virtual Machine</title>
<body>
<p>To create a Virtual Machine (VM) using the GUI, follow the steps below. To use VBoxManage, see <xref href="unattended-guest-install-example.dita"/>.</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>In <ph conkeyref="vbox-conkeyref-phrases/vbox-mgr"/> window, click <uicontrol>Home</uicontrol>, then click <uicontrol>New</uicontrol> and follow the workflow.</p>
<p>If you don't see the <uicontrol>New Virtual Machine</uicontrol> workflow, change the experience level to <uicontrol>Basic</uicontrol>. See <xref href="ui-experience-level.dita"/>. In <uicontrol>Expert</uicontrol> mode you see all the options on one page.</p>
<p>The exact settings available depend on the architecture of the host platform.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Once created, the virtual machine is displayed in the <uicontrol>Machines</uicontrol> list in <ph conkeyref="vbox-conkeyref-phrases/vbox-mgr"/>, with the name that you specify. You can make changes later, in the <uicontrol>Settings</uicontrol> for the VM.</p>
<p>You must supply an operating system image, in ISO format, for the operating system you intend to install on the VM. <ph conkeyref="vbox-conkeyref-phrases/product-name"/> does not supply the OS or any license required to use it.</p>
