2. Distribution.
The BIZNET ISO 8859-2 (Central European) X Window System Fonts
are distributed as multiple compressed (with GNU gzip) tar
files:
ISO8859-2-bdf.tar.gz - source font files in the BDF format
(Adobe Bitmap Distribution Format)
ISO8859-2-pcf.tar.gz - font files in the PCF (Portable
Compiled Font) format
ISO8859-2-pcfZ.tar.gz - compressed PCF font files (.pcf.Z)
3. Easy Installation.
You will need the GNU gunzip command to uncompress the
distribution file and the tar command to extract font files
from the archive. To install the fonts in your system you need
to create an empty directory and unpack one of the provided
distribution tar files in this directory. For example:
mkdir /usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2
gunzip -c ISO8859-2-pcf.tar.gz | (cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2; tar xvf -)
This command will create subdirectories misc, 75dpi and 100dpi
in the /usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2 directory; The fonts files in
the PCF format (Portable Compiled Font) will be unpacked into
these subdirectories.
Then you will need to use the xset command to append these
directories to the Xserver font path:
xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/misc
xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi
Now, you can check whether the fonts are available to your
system. The command:
xlsfonts -fn '*-iso8859-2' | more
will list the names of all the available ISO-8859-2 X Window
fonts. You may use the xfd command to view the full character
set of a given font. For example:
xfd -fn '-adobe-times-medium-i-normal--20-140-100-100-p-94-iso8859-2'
To change your font path permanently you must to modify the
configuration of your Xserver.
4. Overview of the ISO 8859-2 X Window System Fonts.
The BIZNET ISO 8859-2 (Central European) X Window System Fonts
are a set of ISO 8859-2 (sometimes called also ISO Latin2)
X Window System bitmap typefaces. The ISO 8859-2 is a part of
the ISO 8859 standard for 8bit (single-byte) digital character
sets for Western alphabets (i.e. Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic,
Hebrew and Greek). The ISO 8859 standard was developed by ECMA
(European Computer Manufacturer's Association) and approved by
the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
The ISO 8859-2 is the official ISO standard for encoding
national characters in several Latin-written Slavic and Central
European languages. It applies to Albanian, Croatian, Czech,
Hungarian, Polish, Rumanian, Slovak, Slovene and Sorbian (in
addition it can be used for English, Finnish, Irish and
German). However, the standard distribution of the X Window
System is lacking support for ISO 8859-2.
The BIZNET ISO 8859-2 (Central European) X Window System
Font set contains ISO 8859-2 typefaces derived from the
original ISO 8859-1 typefaces included into the X Window
System, Version 11, Release 6.3 (X11R6.3). The set contains 395
different typefaces. The set contains a `twin' ISO 8859-2 font
for every ISO 8859-1 font from X11R6.3. Therefore, it is
sufficient to change `1' (or `*') to `2' in the charset
encoding field of the font name to select the corresponding
ISO 8859-2 font instead of the original ISO 8859-1 font.
The fonts provide the same look and feel as the originals,
including metric information. All the fonts contain the full
ISO 8859-2 character set.
The names of the BIZNET ISO 8859-2 (Central European)
X Window System Fonts contain the name `BIZNET' in the foundry
field. In addition, to avoid trademark names, such as Times,
Helvetica, New Century Schoolbook, Lucida, Utopia or Charter,
the family names have been changed to BIZNET Kathimerini,
BIZNET Aplos, BIZNET Anagnostiko, BIZNET Fotinos, BIZNET
Chimera and BIZNET Chartis respectively. For improved
functionality the fonts.alias files have been provided.
For example, the font name
-b&h-lucida-bold-i-normal-sans-11-80-100-100-p-69-iso8859-2
is an alias which will be resolved to the name of the font
-biznet-fotinos-bold-i-normal-sans-11-80-100-100-p-69-
iso8859-2
which looks like Lucida Bold Italic Sans but contains all the
ISO 8859-2 specific glyphs. The font.alias files comprise as
well entries for `scalable' names. For example the `scalable'
font alias
-b&h-lucida-bold-i-normal-sans-0-0-100-100-p-0-iso8859-2
will be resolved as
-biznet-fotinos-bold-i-normal-sans-0-0-100-100-p-0-iso8859-2
5. Supported Systems.
The BIZNET ISO 8859-2 (Central European) X Window System Fonts
are not specific to any particular platform or application. The
fonts have been tested with several windowing and operating
systems:
Solaris 2.4 with OpenWindows 3.0
Solaris 2.4 with X11R6
Solaris 2.5.1 with X11R6.3
Ultrix 4.4 with X11R6
HP-UX 9.07 (HP-VUE)
HP-UX 10.01, 10.10 (HP-CDE)
FreeBSD 2.2 with XFree86 3.2
The fonts have been also successfully tested with several font
servers:
X11R6.3pl1 fontserver (xfs)
HP-UX 9.07 fontserver
IBM AIX 3.2.5 fontserver
as well as with several X Terminal systems (NCD, Tektronix,
Enware) and X Window emulation software (e.g. eXcursion,
eXceed). The fonts can be used in all the applications
including Netscape, GNU Emacs, XEmacs, xterm, etc.
We would like to acknowledge the beta version testers for their
efforts and feedback: Wojciech Myszka of Technical University
of Wroclaw, Wojciech Sylwestrzak of ICM, Warsaw University and
Piotr Piatkowski of Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow.
