This is the source for the "xgraph" plotting utility for X11, written
by David Harrison. Even though this program is rather old by now, I
find it very useful, and know of no good substitute. It is now rather
hard to find the source for this program, however. I am therefore
distributing it myself, as permitted by the copyright notice, which

I have also incorporated some improvements made by Peter D Gilbert of
Compaq (Peter.Gilbert@compaq.com). Namely:
1. If given, use the filename (instead of the executable name)
in the title bar.
2. Use more digits as necessary to distinguish grid lines when
zooming in.
3. Fix a bug in the handling of single points.
4. Get rid of the message "unknown event: 12".
5. Web-safe colours (see below).
I also cleaned up the source a bit myself, and changed the program so
that it will pay attention to the =WxH+X+Y geometry specification (as
documented previously, but not implemented). I also made secondary
windows appear slightly offset from the primary window, and made the
default title be blank. John Harrison made some slight mods to get
it to work with Cygwin.
Finally, there are now four options for what the default colors should
be. I prefer ones that are less garish than the originals, and this
is what you'll get if you don't do anything to change the default.
Peter D Gilbert prefers more garish ones, and has also investigated
making colors "web-safe" - ie, set so as to co-exist with netscape,
which tends to hog colors, making using colors that it uses desirable.
To select the default you prefer, follow the directions for changing
the definition of USE_NEW_COLORS near the front of xgraph.c.
I'm not an expert on X-windows program installation, but it appears
that the easiest way to install the program is as follows:

cp xgraph <wherever-you-want-it>
cp xgraph.man <wherever-it-goes>
Note that there may be some warnings relating to incompatible pointer
types. These should not result in problems on machines where all
pointers are the same size as an int.
Three original README files that still seem relevant are present in
the main directory. Two old README files that seem to no longer be
relevant are in the old-readme-files directory.
The main documentation is the man page, in xgraph.man. A version
converted to text (for those allergic to nroff) is in xgraph.man.text.
