MozBook.css - by David Horton
MozBook is a CSS generated approximation of formatted DocBook XML
for use with the Mozilla browser.
How to use MozBook-
MozBook can be used by putting the following line in a Docbook XML
document:
<?xml-stylesheet href="MozBook.css" type="text/css"?>
just below <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
The XML file must then be viewed in the Mozilla web browser to see
the results of the CSS styling.
Why use MozBook-
Normally one would use an XSL stylesheet to transform a DocBook
XML document into an HTML and then display the result in a web
browser. MozBook allows styled DocBook XML to be displayed directly
in the Mozilla browser without the need for the intermediate XSL
transformation.
The purpose of MozBook is two-fold:
1. Hopefully MozBook will provide an easy transition to DocBook
XML for those who already possess the mad HTML skillz.
2. Also MozBook may also help to speed document development for
those already familiar with DocBook XML by providing a sort of
poor man's WYSIWYG tool.
Limitations of MozBook-
* MozBook can only be used with the Mozilla browser and possibly
with Mozilla derivatives.
* MozBook cannot make hypertext links out of <ulink> tags. Link
URL's are displayed in brackets instead.
* MozBook cannot currently do automatic section numbering. This
was due to a bug in the Mozilla browser at the time this
stylesheet was created.
* MozBook is sensitive to the position of elements within an XML
document. This goes against the idea that an element's position
in the DocBook source should not dictate its position in the
output. In other words, just because <bibliography> is at the
top of the XML document does not mean it should be displayed
there. Generally bibliographies go at the end of a document.
True DocBook parsers handle this automatically, MozBook cannot.
How MozBook was created-
The DocBook manual [http://www.docbook.org/tdg/en/html/docbook.html]
has an element reference section that gives some detail on typical
styling of various DocBook tags. For example, the processing
expectations listed for the <note> tag say that <note> is displayed
as a block and often has the word "Note:" associated with it. This
abstract styling information is translated into concrete CSS markup.
Similarly styled tags are grouped together and the cascading aspect
of CSS is leveraged so not every tag has to be defined in order to
achieve a nicely styled look.
