This is the Debian GNU/Linux prepackaged version of xntp, a daemon
implementing the NTP version 3 "Network Time Protocol". The package
is named 'xntp3' to follow the upstream source naming convention.
This package was put together by Bdale Garbee <bdale@gag.com>,
from sources obtained from ftp.udel.edu:/pub/ntp/.
More substantial documentation on what NTP is and how to configure time
syncronization for a campus of hosts is contained in the xntp3-doc package
for Debian. The xntp3-doc package is the 'html' subdirectory from the xntp
distribution.
Note on Export Restrictions:
The xntpd upstream distribution comes in two flavors, which differ only in
the presence of plaintext sourcecode for the DES algorithm. Without this
source in plaintext, the distribution has no exportation restrictions from the
USA. The Debian package is built from the "export" version of the upstream
distribution.
The NTP protocol supports authentication of peers using both DES and MD5.
MD5 has no export limitations. MD5 is strongly recommended by the NTP
community. Therefore, the Debian package does not include functional DES
authentication code, so that we don't have to worry about export restrictions.
If you need DES authentication for backwards compatibility with other hosts,
download the Debian source package for xntp, and read the information in
the libntp/authdes.c stub source file. Frankly, it'd be a better idea to
upgrade your other hosts to a recent xntpd and use MD5 authentication if you
can.
