			X	P	V	M

XPVM is a graphical console and monitor for PVM.  It provides a
graphical interface to the PVM console commands and information,
along with several animated views to monitor the execution of PVM
programs.  These views provide information about the interactions
among tasks in a parallel PVM program, to assist in debugging and
performance tuning.

To analyze a program using XPVM, a user need only compile their
program using the PVM library, version 3.3 or later, which has been
instrumented to capture tracing information at run-time.  Then, any
task spawned from XPVM will return trace event information, for
analysis in real time, or for post-mortem playback from saved
trace files.

For specifics on the various features of XPVM, and how to operate
them, please refer to the appropriate on-line pop-up help information.

How to Get Started:
===================

Thank you for helping with the Beta-Testing of XPVM Version 1.1.
Your cooperation and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Other Things You Need for XPVM:
-------------------------------

1. PVM 3.3.0 or later.
2. TCL 7.3 or later.
3. TK 3.6.1 or later.

You can obtain the latest version of PVM via netlib@ornl.gov,
the same way you obtained XPVM.  If you need the TCL & TK packages,
they are available via anonymous ftp to ftp.smli.com in /pub/tcl.

To install xpvm:
----------------

1. Un-tar your distribution - you should get an "xpvm" directory, with
	"tracer" and "src" sub-directories full o' stuff.

2. Customize "xpvm/src/Makefile.aimk":

	You will need to set up constants for XPVM based on the version
	of PVM installed on your system:

	----------------------------------------------------------------

	For a PVM 3.3.* installation, you should use:

		PVMVERSION = -DUSE_PVM_33
	
	For a PVM 3.4.* installation, you should use:

		PVMVERSION = -DUSE_PVM_34
	
	----------------------------------------------------------------

	You will also need to adjust the definitions for TCLLIBDIR, TKLIBDIR,
	TCLINCL, and TKINCL to point to the locations of the TCL and TK
	libraries and include files on your system, respectively.  Normal
	settings for a personal installation might be:

		TCLLIBDIR = -L/home/joeuser/tcl/$(PVM_ARCH)
		TCLINCL = /home/joeuser/tcl

		TKLIBDIR = -L/home/joeuser/tk/$(PVM_ARCH)
		TKINCL = /home/joeuser/tk

	If TCL and TK are installed in some globally accessible system
	directory for all the users on your system, then you will likely
	want the settings to be something like:

		TCLLIBDIR =
		TCLINCL = /usr/local/tcl

		TKLIBDIR =
		TKINCL = /usr/local/tk

	----------------------------------------------------------------

	You will need to verify the location of the X11 libraries
	and include files on your system, and appropriately set the
	XLIBDIR and XINCL variables.

	If your system is "normal", you can just set:

		XLIBDIR = -L/usr/lib
		XINCL = -I/usr/include/X11

			- or equivalently -
		
		XLIBDIR =
		XINCL =

	----------------------------------------------------------------

	You may also need to add one extra library to the SYSLIBS
	define, to account for the new TCL / TK libraries now using
	shared libraries on siome systems.

	If your system uses the "dl" dynamic linking library, you need
	to add a "-ldl" to SYSLIBS:

		SYSLIBS = (other system dependent libraries...) -ldl -lm
	
	On some systems the library is added by a "-lld", as in:

		SYSLIBS = (other system dependent libraries...) -lld -lm

	And on some systems the library is added by a "-ldld", as in:

		SYSLIBS = (other system dependent libraries...) -ldld -lm

3. Set shell environment variables.

	You must set the XPVM_ROOT shell environment variable to point to
	the absolute path of where you have installed the top directory in
	the XPVM distribution.  For example:

		setenv XPVM_ROOT /home/joeuser/pvm3/xpvm

	You might want to use the .cshrc file stub provided in the
	"xpvm/src/cshrc.stub" file to set $XPVM_ROOT every time you
	start a new shell.

	----------------------------------------------------------------

	You will also need to set the TCL_LIBRARY and TK_LIBRARY variables
	to point to the directories containing the *.tcl initialization files
	for TCL & TK.  For example:

		setenv TCL_LIBRARY /home/jolineuser/tcl/library
		setenv TK_LIBRARY /home/jolineuser/tk/library

4. Once the above changes have been applied, go to the top-level
	"xpvm" directory ($XPVM_ROOT), and type "make".

	This will create an executable "xpvm" file for the architecture
	you are on.  The executable file will be located in a subdirectory
	of "xpvm/src", with the same name as the PVM architecture identifier:

		$XPVM_ROOT/src/$PVM_ARCH/xpvm

		e.g. "/home/joeuser/xpvm/src/SUN4/xpvm"

Using XPVM:
-----------

XPVM is built with on-line help menus.  PVM programs do not need
to be re-compiled to use XPVM (assuming they are using PVM 3.3 or
later.)

XPVM will automatically start up PVM on your machine if it is not
already running, and users can specify a default list of hosts to
include in this start-up configuration, using a ".xpvm_hosts" file
in their home directory (see on-line help under "Hosts" in XPVM).

There are also several new command line arguments supported in XPVM
that allow customized selection of default host files, trace files,
and the local machine name (to allow various network interface choices).
To see XPVM's command line options, execute "xpvm -HELP" (the "-help"
option is predefined for TCL applications :-).
