This is to announce version 2.3 of Xtartan, a program to draw Scottish
tartans. XTartan is an X-Windows based program that generates Scottish
tartans ("plaid" patterns for you Yanks) from information in a standard X
resource file.

The tartan can be interactively modified to change its scale, linewidth, and
its color mode (ancient vs. modern). If you have the GD library, you can
generate gif files. If you have the Xpm library available, you can generate
xpm files as well. You can also display the tartan in the root window. The
latest edition (2.3) gives you the ability to generate "faded" tartans that
are quite acceptable for WWW page backgrounds, and keep the window to the
minimum size of the tartan being viewed.

During interaction, once you have decided on an ideal tartan for an X-Window
background, xtartan can install that tartan onto the root window and exit.

The default resource file contains over 240 tartans.

XTartan can be found on ftp.x.org in /contrib/applications/xtartan-2.3.tar.gz
(URL: ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/applications/xtartan-2.3.tar.gz )

Xpm can be found on at ftp.x.org in /contrib/libraries/xpm-3.4h.tar.gz
(URL: ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries/xpm-3.4h.tar.gz

GD can be downloaded from url: http://www.boutell.com/gd/gd1.2.tar.Z. I do
not know of an FTP site for downloading the file.

After extracting the files, edit the Imakefile to configure the location of
the xpm and gd libraries and header files (or to disable them if you don't
have them), type "xmkmf" and then "make". It has been tested on a
DECStation 5000 (Ultrix 4.3, X11R5) and an SGI Indy (Irix 5.2, X11R5). It
does not require Motif, but Xpm support requires the xpm library which can
be found in ftp.x.org (/contrib/libraries). Vroot support requires vroot.h,
which is provided in a contrib subdirectory.

You do not need to install the app-defaults file, as the tartans have been
embedded in as FALLBACK resources to Xt. If you wish to use the file,
it(XTartan.ad) will need to be placed where it can be read by the normal Xrm
methods, e.g.

	$HOME/XTartan
	$HOME/.desktop-<hostname>/XTartan (for SGI's)
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTartan (global location for standard X)
	/usr/openwin/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTartan (global for OpenWindows)

or some matching directory based on your X installation or
	XENVIRONMENT/XAPPLRESPATH variable values.

A few new tartans have been added, but nothing major. I'll get around to
adding some new ones in 2.4.

XTartan now has a home page:
